Toro Rosso History & Team Record
After creating Red Bull Racing at the end of 2004, Dietrich Mateschitz then purchased Minardi in 2005 to serve as the "Red Bull Junior" team, with already contracted drivers Vitantonio Liuzzi, Scott Speed and Neel Jani behind the wheel. Using rev-limited V10 engines, as opposed to the new V8 designs of other teams, the team initially ran quite well with Liuzzi scoring the team's first point at the 2006 US GP. As the season progressed and the V8 engines were developed the team began to struggle for pace.
Staying with the same line-up for 2007, the team inherited the Ferrari engine contract from Red Bull Racing when the "senior team" switched to Renault power. Integrating the new engines caused major reliability problems, which were compounded by several driver mistakes and crashes. There was obvious friction within the team which culminated in Speed being dropped in favor of Sebastian Vettel for the final 7 races.
During the closing part of 2007, multiple ChampCar champion Sebastien Boudais tested for the team and he signed to partner Vettel for the 2008 season. With the mechanical reliability issues solved the team ran strongly, especially in the wet, with Vettel taking first pole and then the win at the Italian GP. The young German's performances saw him moved to Red Bull Racing for 2009, his replacement being GP2 runner Sebastien Buemi.
