Spyker History & Team Record
Dutch sports car manufacturer Spyker Cars NV bought the Midland F1 team in September 2006, just a year and a half after Midland Group had bought Jordan Grand Prix. At the 2006 Chinese GP the cars sported the orange and silver livery for the first time under the entrant "Spyker MF1 Racing". Over the off-season the team moved to sign sponsors (mainly Dutch), personnel (including designer, Mike Gascoyne) and negotiated a supply of Ferrari engines following Williams taking over the Toyota contract.
The 2007 car was always at the back of the grid but Adrian Sutil scored the teams only point (in Japan) and showed enough talent to gain interest from other teams, while the second car was filled by three different drivers as the team struggled for sponsorship money. The only other high point was when Markus Winkelhock briefly led the rain-soaked European GP at Nurburgring.
As the season went on the teams' parent company lost more money and began looking to sell the racing team. In October 2007 it was announced that Indian industrialist Vijay Mallya had partnered with team director Michel Mol to buy the team and operate it from 2008 under the name Force India.
