Penske F1 History & Team Record
Already a dominant force at the Indianapolis 500, Roger Penske decided to take on the full Formula One Championship with the talented Mark Donahue in 1975 (after entering just the US & Canadian GP's in 1974). After a promising start tragedy struck at the Austrian GP at Zeltweg, when Donohue was killed in practice under somewhat strange circumstances. Although his replacement, the young Ulsterman John Watson gave Penske a win in 1976 in Austria, the team was dispanded at the end of the season. Most of the teams equipment was sold to Gunter Schmid of ATS, although Penske went on to have great success in CART/Indycar with cars built at the teams original F1 factory at Poole in the south of England.
