A product of the Toyota Drivers Academy, the young Japanese raced in the lower categories of European racing working his way up to GP2 in 2008 with his F1 testing for the Toyota team starting the year before. Though he did not find success in the main series, he took the winter GP2 Asia series at his first attempt, driving for DAMS.
His F1 debut came in Brazil when he replaced the injured Timo Glock for the final two GP. During the race he controversially dueled with championship contender Jenson Button, who was not kind in his comments about the Japanese's driving. In Abu Dhabi Kobayashi again qualified well and finished a creditable 6th, seemingly locking in a seat for 2010 but Toyota's sudden withdrawal left him without a drive. He stated he would have to go back to working at his father's sushi restaurant, however, Toyota's place was taken by the reformed Sauber team who signed Kobayashi to partner Pedro de la Rosa in 2010.
