Benetton Team History & Record
Formed at the end of 1985 from what was the Toleman team which raced from 1981 to 1985. The team formed a long-term relationship with Ford in 1987, coming to prominence with the introduction of the HB Series engine and the shrewd signing of Michael Schumacher from under the nose of Eddie Jordan in 1991.
The team switched to Renault power in 1995 and Schumacher delivered the second driver's title for the team before departing to Ferrari. The teams performance slipped over the next few years, particularly after the withdrawal of Renault from F1 at the end of 1997. In 2000 however, Renault decided to return to with a full works effort and purchased the team from the Benetton family with the plan of running works engines with Benetton sponsorship during 2001 before becoming the full works Renault team in 2002.
