Shadow History & Team Record
Beginning life in the Canadian American Challenge Cup (Can-Am), the Shadow team also entered F1 in 1973 with a car penned by former BRM designer, Tony Southgate and with extensive backing from American oil company, UOP. Regular Can-Am drivers, George Follmer and Jackie Oliver initially drove the cars together with a third entry for Brian Redman at the US GP. Unusually, the team also supplied chassis to former world champion Graham Hill's Embassy-Hill team for the 1973 season.
Results were encouraging for the new team and they began 1974 optimistic of challenging for regular points. Shadow Can-Am regular Jean-Pierre Jarier partnered former McLaren driver, Peter Revson who qualified well for the first two races only to retire. While testing for the South African GP at Kyalami, Revson suffered a suspension failure and crashed heavily killing the American star instantly. Redman and Swede Bertil Roos filled the vacant seat at the forthcoming races until the team picked Englishman Tom Pryce to drive for the remaining eight races in the season.
Pryce's performances were good enough to be retained by the team for 1975 and the team started the season in sensational fashion by taking the pole for the opening round in Argentina, only to have mechanical problems sideline Jarier's car. As if to show it was no fluke Jarier also took the pole at the next race in Brazil, only to drop out while leading with eight laps to go. Accidents and mechanical failures plagued the team the rest of the season and despite another pole, this time for Pryce at the British GP, the team scored just 9.5 points (half points were awarded at the shortened Spanish GP).
