Maki History & Team Record
An ambitious F1 project that
originally hoped to be an all-Japanese contender (chassis, engine and drivers).
Sponsorship and development needs however led to the team using the tried and
trusted Ford Cosworth DFV engine and employing European drivers.
American Howden Ganley debuted the car at the 1974 British GP but failed to
qualify the suffered a suspension failure during qualifying for the German GP
(at the infamous Nurburgring) causing Ganley to have a huge accident. The team
reappeared in 1975 with a revised version of the car but failed to qualify for
any of the 5 races that it entered (the car did manage to race at the
non-championship Swiss GP). One final attempt was made to qualify for the
1976 Japanese GP but when this was unsuccessful the team was dissolved. Designer
Masao Ono went on to design a slightly more successful car for the Kojima
team.
