After testing with the Jordan team
during 2003, F3000 regular Baumgartner became the first Hungarian GP driver when
he substituted for Ralph Firman at the Hungarian and Italian races.
His performance was good enough that when combined with sponsorship money from
various Hungarian companies, he secured the second Minardi
seat for 2004. Thanks to multiple retirements at the 2004 US GP he scored his
first Championship point (and the first for Minardi
since Mark Webber at the 2002 Australian GP).
