After failing to qualify the Ecuire Nationale Suisse Lotus-Climax at the 1962 Monaco GP, Siffert joined the team of Georges Filipinetti who entered races as "Ecuire Filipinetti" or "Siffert Racing Team". For the final two "flyaway" races of 1964 (USA and Mexico), Siffert ran his car with Rob Walker's team and this proved to be the start of a long, though not particularly successful partnership.  Although he won several non-championship events, it was not until 1968 when Walker purchased a Lotus 49-DFV that Siffert was finally allowed to showcase his talent in a Grand Prix, winning the British GP at Brands Hatch. At the same time the Swiss was also heading Porsche's World Sportscar Championship team, winning the 24 Hours of Daytona and the Sebring 12 Hours in 1968.

Porsche paid for Siffert to join the works March team in 1970, mainly to stop him from being signed by Ferrari, but the season was a complete disaster with only 3 finishes in 12 starts (plus one non-qualification) and zero points. Despite this setback Siffert was offered the third Yardley BRM seat for 1971 and did not disappoint, taking fifth in the Championship with the highlight being Austria where he took the win, pole and fastest lap.
